How to Make Hoodies and Sweatshirts: Fabrics, Weights, and Fits

A hoodie is the most tactile product a clothing brand can sell. Customers cannot judge it from a photo alone. They judge it when they touch it, pull it over their head, and wear it fifty times. That is why fleece is unforgiving. Get the fabric and fit right, and you create a repeat buyer. Get them wrong, and the reviews say so.

This guide covers the three decisions that determine everything: fabric, weight, and fit. It also covers construction details, embellishment, and the quality checks that separate a premium hoodie from a disposable one.

Start With the Weight

Weight is the fastest way to set expectations. Fleece weight is measured in grams per square metre, shortened to GSM. The number tells you how dense, warm, and substantial the fabric feels.

Lightweight fleece sits around 250 to 280 GSM. It suits spring layering and lighter price points. Midweight fleece runs roughly 300 to 350 GSM, which is the mainstream retail standard. Heavyweight fleece starts near 400 GSM and climbs higher. It feels premium immediately and holds structure through repeated washing.

Heavier is not automatically better. A 500 GSM hoodie is hot and expensive to ship. Match the weight to the climate and use case you actually sell into. If you are still choosing base materials, our guide to the best fabrics for a premium brand covers how weight and fibre interact.

Choose the Fabric Blend Deliberately

Three blends dominate fleece production, and each behaves differently. Pure cotton feels natural and breathable, but it can shrink and loses shape over time. Cotton and polyester blends add durability and reduce shrinkage, which is why they dominate mid-market fleece. Polyester-heavy fleece resists pilling and dries fast, though it can feel less natural against the skin.

Two more terms matter when you read a spec sheet. Brushed fleece is sanded on the inside to create softness. French terry skips that brushing and leaves visible loops, which feels cooler and more textured. Both are valid. They simply serve different customers.

Ask your supplier for the exact composition, not a general description. Percentage mix affects shrinkage, pilling, and how well the garment takes decoration.

Understand Fit and Silhouette

Fit decides who the hoodie flatters. Three silhouettes cover most of the market. Classic fit sits straight with moderate room through the body. Relaxed fit adds volume through the chest and sleeves for a modern streetwear feel. Oversized fit exaggerates both and often drops the shoulder seam.

Confirm four measurements before production: body length, chest width, sleeve length, and shoulder width. Also confirm the rib height at the cuffs and hem. Small changes in rib height change how the garment hangs.

Check the ratios, not just the numbers. A hoodie with a wide body but short length looks unbalanced. Compare your spec against a sample you already consider well-fitted.

Construction Details That Decide Longevity

Two hoodies can share the same fabric and still differ enormously in quality. The difference lives in construction.

Look for a double-layer hood, which holds its shape instead of collapsing. Check that drawcords have metal or reinforced tips and proper eyelets. Inspect the stitching at stress points such as the armholes, pocket corners, and hood seam. Reinforced stitching stops the seams that fail first.

Consider the pocket too. A kangaroo pocket needs bar tacks at the corners, or it tears within weeks. Ask whether the inside is brushed or looped, because that changes how the garment feels on skin.

Blanks or Full Custom Manufacturing

You have two routes to a finished hoodie. Buying blanks means faster launches and lower risk, but your product looks like everyone else's base garment. Full custom manufacturing gives you control over weight, fit, colour, and details, but it needs minimums, samples, and patience.

Most brands start with blanks to validate demand, then move to small-batch production once a design proves itself. That sequence protects your cash while you learn what your customers actually buy. If you are still assembling the range, start with designing a collection rather than a single product.

Decoration on Fleece

Fleece behaves differently from jersey when you decorate it. Its brushed or looped surface changes how ink and thread sit on the fabric.

Embroidery works beautifully on midweight and heavyweight fleece because the fabric supports the stitch without distortion. Printed graphics need careful curing, especially on brushed surfaces. Large prints can stiffen the garment, so test a sample before you commit. Our comparison of embroidery and printing covers which method suits which product.

Whatever you choose, verify the result on the actual fabric. A print that looks perfect on a t-shirt can behave differently on 400 GSM fleece.

Quality Checks Before You Ship

Inspect every first production run closely. Measure a sample against your spec sheet and record the differences. Wash a unit several times and watch for shrinkage, pilling, and colour loss. Pull the seams at stress points and check the stitching holds.

Then review the details a customer notices first: drawcord tips, hood shape, and symmetry across the shoulders. A crooked hood or uneven cuff ends reads as cheap instantly. Our sample and quality checklist walks through this process step by step.

The Bottom Line

Making a great hoodie comes down to three deliberate choices. Pick a weight that matches your climate and price point. Choose a blend that survives real washing. Settle on a fit you can reproduce consistently across every size.

Then protect those choices with construction details and honest quality checks. Do that, and your fleece becomes the product customers reorder without thinking. At MintiClothing, we help brands build fleece that holds up, from everyday crewnecks to heavyweight sweatshirts and hoodies. Pair them with our t-shirts for a range that sells all year. Tell us what you want to make, and we will help you spec it properly.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
